The Call of Spring
As the guest comes gently rapping,
When you’re in the house a-napping,
And you rouse yourself to answer in drowsy, lazy mood;
So April rains are dropping
Till the torpid ground is sopping,
And the seeds begin to murmur, their awakening is rude.
When the guest is gayly greeted,
And within is primly seated,
Your welcome is so earnest that he wants to come again.
So the seeds awake, enraptured
At the moisture they have captured,
Will swell. and burst to beautify the forest and the glen.
When Nature’s tears are falling,
Then in sympathy she’s calling
To hearts that lie a-sleeping ’neath the surface of the ground.
If the call to deepest feeling
Shall be o’er thee gently stealing,
Arouse and thank your Maker that your heart can still be
found. °
